It’s not an alien, it’s just a newborn.
You spent your pregnancy dreaming of the life growing inside of you. You can’t wait for the smiles, the bonding, the love you know will flow from your heart the moment your eyes are on your newborn child. So why do you feel like screaming and running away?
Most, if not all new parents, suffer from culture shock. In theory, having a newborn around should change your life that much, right? It’s a small thing, a baby, how much noise could it really make?
What new parents quickly learn is that a new baby is an extremely needy, easily overwhelmed little creature that more resembles an alien from outer space than those cute babies they have been ogling at on the streets.
A baby relies upon the parent for everything and this new responsibility can become quickly overwhelming to a parent that hasn’t slept in weeks and feels like they can’t make a sandwich never mind take care of an infant.
You need to remember that a baby is a baby, and yes, it is a big responsibility but you do not have to let your mind spiral out of control. Yes, you want your child to go to college, but you do not have to fund the entire college fund within their first year of life.
As you get used to your new baby, take time to sit back and breathe. Know that you can’t do everything at once and sometimes you might not be able to be perfect. Part of good parenting is making mistakes and learning from those mistakes.
Parenting tip of the day: “Breathe, smile, and breathe again.”
